This is an introduction to SIP Trunking and connections for telephones and discussion of SIP telephony network with respect to the PSTN-Public Switched Telephone Network via SS7-Signaling System 7. This tutorial will present the various SS7 protocols used in PSTN signaling from a SIP phone. Later, other call processing scenarios will be presented. The following are the steps in the SIP signaling process to complete a call via the PSTN-Public Switched Telephone Network. There are others but this is a start. SIP Trunk - Definition
from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A SIP trunk is a service offered by an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) that connects a company's PBX to the ordinary telephone system (PSTN) via Internet using the SIP VoIP standard.
Using a SIP trunk may simplify administration for the organization as the SIP trunk typically will use the same Internet connection that is used for normal data. This eliminates installation and maintenance of a BRI/PRI connection at each location.

SIP Trunks and Service Providers
A diverse group of Service Providers are building SIP network capabilities including mobile network operators, large Inter-Exchange Carriers, Competitive Local Exchange Carriers, large cable operators, and Tier 2 service providers. While the initial Service Provider offerings tended to highlight new SIP services, many carriers have gone beyond offering SIP as a service and have standardized on it as the core signaling protocol within their networks. The two primary standards bodies (3GPP/3GPP2) that are defining specifications for third generation (3G) mobile systems have both specified SIP as the primary signaling protocol for IP-based voice and multimedia. Many new services being introduced on existing 2.5G wireless networks are already based on SIP. So the future of mobile phones is being delivered through SIP.
