Programmable SIP Application Servers for Next Generation Networks
Service Creation and Service Delivery All in One
A new whitepaper from Ubiquity Software Corporation
Abstract: The adoption of open, flexible, standards-based service creation environments (SCEs) is critical for the rapid introduction of new services and business models into emerging Next Generation Networks. These SCEs in turn will need to interact with a variety of the underlying building blocks of these new services. Out of all of these, the most important is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), already in wide scale deployment around the world supporting Voice over IP hosted services, enterprise IP PBX systems and client/server desktop applications, as well as playing a vital part in the Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectures of both fixed and mobile service providers.
This document explains the central role that SIP Application Servers and SIP Servlet-based Service Creation Environments have in supporting a wide range of new services and new communities of interaction.

SIPITs, or Session Initiation Protocol Interoperability Tests, are week-long events where companies bring their SIP implementations to ensure they work together. The SIPITs are open to anyone with a working SIP implementation.
Currently, the SIPITs are held twice a year. Different companies or organizations host each event, and each host chooses the venue.
The goal of the events is to refine both the protocol and its implementations. The SIPITs are a driving force shaping SIP into a globally interoperable protocol for real time Internet communication services. For more information about the SIPit events, visit http://www.sipit.net.

New book: The 3G IP Multimedia Subsystem: Merging the Internet and the Cellular Worlds
Written by SIP experts Gonzalo Camarillo and Miguel Garcia-Martin, The 3G IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) describes the new wireless multimedia domain specified by 3GPP and 3GPP2 that will bring SIP to millions of 3G terminals. This book describes the IMS by analyzing the protocols that were developed by the IETF and then adopted by 3GPP and 3GPP2. Each technology is first presented as it was designed by the IETF, and then as it is used in the IMS.
This book devotes a whole chapter to the basic concepts of SIP and its extensions and another one to the use of SIP in the IMS. Additionally, this book explores SIP-based services such as presence, instant messaging, and push-to-talk. This book also explores, by first introducing the Internet technology and then its usage in the IMS, other concepts in addition to SIP, such as Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA), Security, Quality of Service, Media Encoding, and Media Transport.

SIP Forum Releases SIP Test Framework
In response to demand for SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) device interoperability, the SIP Forum (www.sipforum.org) announces completion and release of its first SIP test suite, called the SIP Forum Test Framework.
This SIP Forum Test Framework (SFTF) v1.0, is being released as open source. In order to obtain future open-source community support for this project for the future, the SIP Forum has elected to host the project at SIPfoundry.org's Web site.

PROTOS Test-Suite: c07-sip
The purpose of this test-suite is to evaluate implementation level security and robustness of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) implementations.
iLBC Freeware
iLBC (internet Low Bitrate Codec) is a FREE speech codec suitable for robust voice communication over IP. The codec is designed for narrow band speech and results in a payload bit rate of 13.33 kbit/s with an encoding frame length of 30 ms and 15.20 kbps with an encoding length of 20 ms. The iLBC codec enables graceful speech quality degradation in the case of lost frames, which occurs in connection with lost or delayed IP packets.
GIPS iLBC
GIPS iLBC a royalty free, low-bit rate codec with high packet loss robustness. iLBC delivers better speech quality than G.729A and G.723.1, under any conditions and offers substantially better quality when networks are congested and with the presence of packet loss. The iLBC codec is currently a work item of the IETF audio/video transport Working Group as a part of IETF’s standardization efforts.
A new online book on SIP for core developers, System engineers and researchers (MS Word format)
The annotated version of the SIP RFC (3261) - This online book enables the core developer to have a positive friendly experience with the main SIP RFC (3261). The SIP RFC is well written, but naturally the authors could not fit in that large and detailed document (269 pages) all the examples and explanations, which may have greatly assisted developers when going over the material. In addition the IETF constraint of the need to generate pure text (ASCII) portable documents impaired the distinguished authors from being able to use cross references, emphasized text, external links to other RFCs, Footnotes etc. - The annotated version of the SIP RFC (3261) attempts to correct that situation. "It has hundreds of elaborating footnotes with intent to reach the number of 2000 in future revisions". With the MS-Word web option ON you can go back and forth between all associated sections. That makes the SIP RFC a powerful working tool.
