REGULAR FEATURES:

Wise words

One ship drives east and another drives west
With the selfsame winds that blow.
'Tis the set of sails and not the gales
Which tells us the way to go.

3Com sponsors The SIP Center

We are very pleased to welcome 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) as the newest member of The SIP Center team. 3Com believes in standards based, open architecture systems and has been a strong supporter and early adopter of the SIP technology since its inception. 3Com has had SIP products and been participants in the SIP-bakeoffs (now called SIP IT events) since their inception. 3Com also had the privilege to host the 4th session of the bake-off in April 2000.

3Com believes with standards compliant SIP networks everyone wins - as this facilitates inter-operability among different vendors and helps foster higher innovation in the industry. SIP further facilitates deployment of productivity enhancing applications in the enterprises - the real goal of converged networks and true benefits of an IP Telephony deployment. Introducing Java in Communications - A java.net community

Java in Communications is a gathering of those who are in the communications industry working to make Java a fundamental part of the communications platform. Communications services is an industry waiting to go big and Java is making that happen. Make the most of the cool code you find here and please contribute back for the good of your fellow developers.

About half the projects are SIP related. Java.Net is built for Developer collaboration - a resource to get code and/or libraries to build projects or products. Most of the activity is centered around SIP with around 2,600 downloads per month of the JAIN SIP protocol Stack!

VASA's SIP in Carrier Networks Update

(C) VASA January 2004

VASA issued a report titled "SIP in Carrier Networks" in November 2002. The report was an assessment of the status of SIP deployments, and VASA members used the information provided by respondents to identify key actions the SIP community could take to accelerate the deployment of SIP in carrier networks. The report generated constructive discussion within the SIP community, particularly on IETF mailing lists. A summary of the report is available at www.vasaforum.org.

Partially in response to a March 10, 2003 article on the SIP in Carrier Networks report in Telephony magazine, some key players in the SIP community indicated a desire to provide updated information to VASA. VASA members agreed that the understanding of the state of deployment of SIP in Carrier Networks could be expanded by compiling updates and additional information, and issued a Request for Update and Additional Information in April 2003. VASA's objectives for the 2003 Request for Update were:

  • Develop an updated snapshot of SIP deployments (products and applications) today and/or planned within the next 2 years (network deployments and trials)
  • Understand the portfolio of services enabled by SIP, and in particular, which service categories might justify either interconnection of existing networks (TDM, H.323) with SIP network elements or migration from these networks to SIP
  • Document/catalog progress made since mid-year 2002 on calls for action issued by VASA
  • Collect information on current or planned third generation mobile deployments involving SIP.
