The coming year will see SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) increasingly push out from the core to the endpoints, accelerating the decomposition of voice systems as SIP proxy servers assume responsibility for call routing, state functions, and control. IP PBX's got convergence going by grafting voice onto IP data networks, but they are a voice-centric platform that may have no role in a truly IP-centric future underpinned by SIP.
