3GPP selected IPsec ESP for the IMS security model which works fine in the 3G network where there are no NATs, but for TISPAN to implement IMS in a fixed line network where NATs are ubiquitous an alternative was needed. TISPAN has selected UDP encapsulation of IPsec, the paper looks at this choice and how it overcomes the NAT traversal problem.
