A day dawns, quite like other days; in it, a single hour comes, quite like other hours; but in that day and in that hour the chance of a lifetime faces us. - Maltbie Babcock
Miercom is currently preparing a survey that will consider the developments in SIP since this time last year. Discussing where SIP is "at" it will look at what SIP is delivering today and at what issues remain. The results of this survey will appear in the June issue of Business Communications Review and will be presented at the Voicecon show in San Francisco, CA (August). To get your copy and have your voice heard please email Martin Milner. Thank you.

Session Border Control in IMS-based Converged Networks
Session Border Controllers (SBCs) that can be physically separated into signalling and media elements are an essential part of building converged networks based on an IMS core. Between access and core networks, SBCs provide signalling security, Lawful Interception, Emergency Call Handling and, where required, NAPT, firewalling and traffic policing at the media layer. Additionally, they can direct users to the correct home network. SBCs have the advantage that, unlike most elements in this newly defined architecture, the functionality is deployable today.
This white paper provides an overview of the different strands of standardization that are providing the base for converged networks to become a reality and describes some of the key functional elements. It then shows how the Newport Networks 1460 SignallingProxy™ and MediaProxy™ can be used to provide practical, secure and reliable access to an IMS core for wireless and wireline services.

SIP: The way forward for VoIP?
by Silicon.com
SIP (session initiation protocol) has become the new standard for VoIP and is expected to become more and more ubiquitous, analysts believe.
According to a new report by research company Frost and Sullivan, SIP is now "widely accepted" in the industry and is set to boom across Europe, as well as in Africa and the Middle East, as operators seek to deliver convergent communications.

GSMA Trials to Pave the Way For Global Rollout of Video Share
Fifty companies involved in IMS/SIP trials across Europe, Asia & North America.
The GSM Association (GSMA), in an initiative led by TeliaSonera, has begun interoperability trials on three continents to ensure that mobile users will be able to share video across networks. Successful completion of the trials, taking place in Europe, Asia and the U.S., will ensure that Video Share services work smoothly across networks and national boundaries right from launch.
The GSMA has brought together the world’s leading telecom equipment makers, including Ericsson, LG, Lucent, Motorola, Nokia, NEC, Samsung, Siemens and Sony-Ericsson, for the trials to ensure that this service will work across as many mobile devices as possible. Other leading technology companies, such as Intel Corporation, are also participating in the trials.

US VoIP market ripe for the picking, say insiders
A new entrant with the right strategic stuff may swoop into and dominate the US VoIP industry during the next five years, said Mike Matthews, head of product marketing at communications vendor Aculab.
..."I would suggest we are going to see a player, who many of us will not know the name of right now, become a key player in this space," Matthews said. "We are ripe for a big player to fly in and rip this market to pieces because it's very viable."...
... The industry also currently lacks a mobile VoIP phone based on SIP, or session initiation protocol, Marchioni said. SIP is the forerunner to become the IP communications standard. Marchioni said it likely would just be a matter of time before wireless SIP-based VoIP phones are developed...
