Editors Note - Ubiquity Developer Network
Greetings!
Fantastic news this month! A brand new resource is now available for developers to create and go-to-market with your SIP applications.
When Ubiquity launched The SIP Center back in July 2000, we strived to build the biggest and best resource for SIP available in the world. With the help of an energetic and intelligent community, and the support of our sponsors, it became much more than that. More than 50,000 people visit the site each month for the latest news, whitepapers, tools and resources on all things SIP. In response to a changing market, and the changing needs of the people who create services and applications with SIP, Ubiquity has shifted into the next gear and built another even more powerful resource.
The SIP Center is where you can learn about the basics of SIP, its architecture and its many uses in the commercial world. The Ubiquity Developer Network (UDN) is where you can go to create and go-to-market with SIP applications based on Ubiquity's SIP Application Server. There are endless possibilities and there are real commercial opportunities out there. The UDN is where you go to get the tools, resources and any expert advice you may need to get your product on the road and start making money!
There is an incredible amount of good information and expert help there and I am delighted to be involved as a Producer on the site. I will continue to dig out all those tools and resources that are added to The SIP Center each month as I help to build the next generation community on the UDN.
Without further ado, please check out the UDN...

Ubiquity SIP A/S enables successful IMS demonstration for wireless and fixed consumer applications |
Siemens Communications and Time Warner Cable recently showcased fully integrated fixed line, mobile and WiFi broadband technologies via the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) designed to deliver fixed mobile convergence (FMC). The demonstrations, which recently took place at Time Warner’s U.S. facility, highlighted the practical value for network operators of adopting Siemens’ IMS solutions and also showed how consumers can enjoy shared multimedia applications, entertainment features and communication sessions – all on the basis of converged solutions. Gizmo Project - A developer of a SIP-based "softphone" that allows people to make PC-to-PC calls for free. Gizmo also includes IM, free customizable voice-mail, free conference calling, and more. It's a great example of a client application using and promoting all the good things about the SIP standard.

Voicemail spam... Call eavesdropping... Call impersonation... regulatory compliance... The list goes on. BorderWare’s SIPassure SIP Firewall mitigates application layer threats and enables secure IP telephony. Concerned about interoperability? Don’t be. SIPassure works with the most popular SIP based applications on the market today such as Cisco Call Manager and Microsoft Live Meeting. Visit our web site to learn more!
SIP Security and the IMS Core
Much has been written about the security of SIP based networks and security of Voice over IP in general, but ultimately good security is a complete architecture, not a single product or protocol. The advent of Fixed/Mobile Convergence and IMS has created some widely accepted standards and has equally highlighted architectural differences in the converging networks. Whilst the overall objective of providing a flexible, secure network and secure services is common, the implementation details differ from network to network.

Next Generation Identity Management Systems for MSOs
By Susan Oliver and Alan Lloyd
Abstract In this paper the authors identify the trends in Identity Management and the information engineering required to deliver it. Of particular interest are the trends impacting larger scale on line business and Multiple Service Operators (MSOs). We also identify the shift in IT engineering doctrines associated with specifying, designing and integrating these newer systems with core and legacy applications. We then introduce how next generation identity systems will be designed and supported by a natural evolution in "smarter" directory service technologies and their associated directory enabled applications.

The IMS : IP Multimedia Concepts and Services in the Mobile Domain
by Miikka Poikselka, Aki Niemi, Hisham Khartabil, Georg Mayer
We have telephony to talk to each other, messaging to dispatch mail or instant messages, browsing to read published content and search engines to locate content sites. However, current mobile networks do not provide the possibility for one application rich terminal to communicate with another in a peer-to-peer session beyond voice calls. Mobile telephony with the current technology has been hugely successful and shows that there is immense value in communicating with peers while being mobile, and with increasingly available smarter multimedia terminals the communication experience will be something more than just exchanging voice. Those multimedia terminals need IP multimedia networks. Hence, the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed a standard for SIP based IP multimedia service machinery known as 'The IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem)' and this informative book explains everything you need to know about it...

Register on the UDN to try out Ubiquity's Developer Studio and Developer Edition. Ubiquity Developer Studio (UDS) simplifies production, debugging and deployment of advanced real-time applications. UDS tools help you to produce, integrate, test and deploy code faster and reduce your time- to-market. Once you download UDS, you can start development immediately within the familiar Eclipse environment. Achieve significant reductions in coding time utilizing ready built components and UDS tools. Plus, as the UDS is fully integrated with Ubiquity Developer Edition, you can test and debug your applications directly in the desktop environment.
You can also download an evaluation version of Appcelerator™ SOOF - A Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based development and deployment platform that bridges the gap between IT and telecommunications development platforms, allowing developers to rapidly create new real-time telephony applications based on SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).

By now most of us in the telecommunications industry have heard all about the virtues of SIP from a wide variety of sources. The buzz has been going on for a number of years and has now reached a point that the discussion has evolved from a futuristic view reminiscent of science fiction to business-level applications that are being used in a variety of business applications today. SIP support is finding its way into communications servers (IP PBXs), IP client devices, gateways, applications, and firewalls. In fact, you might be using SIP every day and not even realize it. So, how will SIP (define - news -alerts) impact converged enterprises and how is its adoption likely to change the telecommunications landscape.

Media Servers & Applications Development: The Need for Speed
Just what is a media server? And how large is the market for them?
The telecom industry has several definitions and a multitude of projections. If you Google the term "media server", you get the gamut of hits, from PC-based streaming-media devices all the way to carrier-class, SIP-based media processing servers. Closer to our industry, in February 2006 Moriana Group defined the “media server” as a shareable media resource providing play, record and transcoding between various media formats and/or synchronizing of audio and video.

SIP: A Key to Convergence in the Enterprise
In today’s increasingly connected world, many employees of an enterprise are computer literate enough to use the latest communications technologies, such as an Instant Message (IM) application or an IP phone. Yet they still complain that they need multiple applications to reach their colleagues or customers; one application for sending and receiving Instant Messages, one application or device for telephone and/or video calls, and another one for collaboration tools such as a whiteboard. Occasionally, they even need to use one application just to set up another application. It is even worse for system administrators who have to manage multiple, disparate systems. However, there is an answer: the “Converged Platform” where multiple features and functionalities are all combined into one client or device; a “one-stop” concept, making it a potential candidate for the next killer app. The increasing need for scalable and flexible converged communications mandates SIP as the protocol that serves as the backbone of the platform.
