If you do not get what you want it is a sign that you did not seriously want it. - Rudyard Kipling
There is a free User Agent you can download from the Ubiquity Developer Network. You need to register to download it but it only takes a jiffy to register and then you get access to hoards of other cool stuff on the UDN. You can play around with the User Agent on the SIP Center SIP Application Server. You only get to play with the proxy part of the SIP Application server. If you want all the other bits like SIP Servlet Container, IMS functions, Conference SDK and Application Building Blocks for example, give the good folks at Ubiquity a call to find out more about it.

| IMS SIP: The Right Solution for Widespread Next Generation Networks |
by Adi Paz, RADVISION
Today’s telecommunication arena is rapidly moving towards next-generation networks (NGNs) that offer ubiquitous, converged services over converged voice, video, data and mobile networks. Until very recently, the prevailing telecommunications paradigm was based on multiple types of networks, each serving different types of applications.
While IP-related technology holds the most promise for meeting the requirements of NGNs, the use of the global Internet is quite limiting. The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is an architecture that allows delivery of identical services to fixed and mobile customers – regardless of whether they are connected through the packet-switched (PS) or circuit-switched (CS) network. IMS-based services enable communication in a variety of modes – including voice, text, location, presence, messaging, pictures and video, or any combination of these.

Motivation:
No matter what you say, the look does matter... How much time, money, energy and bad feelings could be saved by having a virtual pre-date over the video phone...? Let alone security!
Feature:
The two virtual daters can use their IP phones to first conduct a normal voice phone call. Then at their will they can choose (on-the-fly) to upgrade the call to a video call. The offerree may refuse to upgrade (while keeping the voice part of the call going) or may choose to accept the video upgrade, but only in a receiving mode (!) or may choose to fully accept the upgrade (i.e. both send and receive). In any case the voice part of the call is not impacted.

It is quite easy to get lost in the jungle/maze of SIP and IMS specifications. The enabler protocols of these technologies (e.g. SIP, RTP, DNS, Diameter) are the subject of numerous specifications that have been produced by different standard organizations such as IETF, 3GPP, 3GPP2, TISPAN and others. It can be difficult to locate the right document, or even to determine the set of specs about these protocols. Don't Panic! This paper serves as a guide to the SIP/IMS specs. It lists the specifications under the SIP/IMS umbrella, briefly summarizes each, and groups them into categories.

| Fault-tolerant Planning for SIP Networks |
TECHtionary.com expands SIP Essentials with new sections on Fault-tolerant planning for SIP networks and new insights on PBX Trunk Replacement. Here are some highlights from the animated tutorial available at http://www.techtionary.com. SIP Trunking provides improved options for multi-carrier services and for disaster planning. For example, Proxy ARP-Address Resolution Protocol is a default feature on most routers. This is a simple means of creating fault-tolerant networks with one or more additional routers. Each router can respond to user/workstation requests if the router can reach (send/receive) the IP-Internet Protocol address. Each workstation can dynamically access multiple routers from the LAN-Local Area Network. If any router fails, the workstation can immediately access other routers on the internetwork (network). Users can access this feature by changing their Windows setting default gateway.
